29 CONDITIONS OF TIJANIYYAH SUFI COURSE
تسعة وعشرون شروط لطريقة التجانية

ينقسم هذه شروط إلى خمس فصول
These 29 Tijaniyyah’s Conditions are re-arranged (from its Arabic version*) and divided into five sections as follow:

فصل الأولّ: شروط لإرسال فى هذه طريقة
1ST SECTION: CONDITIONS CERTIFYING THE TRANSMISSION OF AFFILIATION IN THIS PATH-TAREEQAH

١ كون الشيخ الذي يلقن الأذكار, مأذونا له في التلقين إذنا صحيحا من القدوة أو ممن أذن له إذنا صحيحا
1. The disciple of this Path should constitute with the Shaykh** (Spiritual Guide) who shall guide/teach him or her the Adhkaar (of this spiritual path) as authorized for him from the transmitted channel and chain of Authenticity [of Shaykh Ahmad Tijaani (RTA)].


٢ كون التلميذ مأذونا, بتلقين صحيح ممن كان له إذن صحيح من القدوة ولو بوسائط
2. The disciple of this Path should be the (Sufi) student authorized with valid instruction from unique Shaykh who has valid authorization [from Shaykh Ahmad Tijaani’s modelism].

[Any would-be adherent of this Tareeqah who fails to fulfill these conditions has no valid affiliation to it and has never connected with Shaykh Ahmad Tijaani (RA) at all].


فصل الثانى: الصحبة بين الشيخ والمريد
2ND SECTION: SPECIAL COMPANIONSHIP BETWEEN THE SHAYKH AND THE DISCIPLE.
٣ عدم زيارة الأولياء الأحياء و الأموات والإخوان من طريقته فإنهم تجوز زيارتهم مطلقا أى  الأحياءوالأموات وهذا أصل من أصول التصوف ثابت في كتب الصوفية
قديما وحديثا لكى لا يفتن المريد بغير شيخه ويتعلق بغيره ومن ثم
لا تجدى فيه تربية ولا يصلح لا لشيخه ولا لغيره وهذا لا يمنع أن
يتعلم المريد التفسير والحديث واللغة والعلوم الدينية على يد سائر
العلماء والشيوخ المسلمين من غير الطريقة إلا إذا كان منكرا
للطرق الصوفية أو معاديا لأولياء الله الصالحين إلا الأنبياء والصحابة
3. The disciple of this Path should not visit (any of) the saints alive and dead-, except the Prophets, the companions and the brethren of his (Tijaniyyah Sufi) Path because their visitations both alive and dead- are permissible. This is one of the fundamentals of Sufism ancient and modern, so as not to seduce the Mureed (disciple) without his Shaykh and not to relate (to anyone) without him and should a disciple appears in that midst of other sets, he/she should not strive to take the teaching therein. Yet, this does not prevent the Sufi student to learn the Exegesis of the Qur’an, the Prophetic Traditions, Language Ethics, and Religious Sciences from all other Muslim Scholars and Shaykhs without them being in (this) Sufi Path except by way of denial of the Sufi methods or hostile to the righteous saints of Allaah.


٤ دوام محبة الشيخ بلا انقطاع إلى الممات
4. The disciple of this Path should keep loving the Shaykh without disruption/break-off till eternity.


٥ أن لا يصدر منه سب ولا بغض ولا عداوة للشيخ رضي الله عنه
5. The disciple of this Path should never express (any) insult, hatred, and enmity (hostility) towards Shaykh Ahmad Tijaani, may Allaah be satisfied with him.


٦ مداومة الورد إلى الممات
6. The disciple of this Path should be persistent in performance of the (Tijaniyyah) compulsory litanies (wird- litany; awraad - litanies) until the period of death***.


٧ الإعتقاد وهو التصديق والتسلم لجميع ما ورد عن الشيخ من قول وعمل
7. The disciple of this Path should believe and not refute the life-style of Shaykh Ahmad Tijaani (RTA) both from his word(s) and action(s).


۸ السلامة من الإنتقاد وهو ضد الاعتقاد
8. The disciple of this Path should be secured from objecting Shaykh’s opinion(s) [i.e; to avoid criticizing his doctrines).

[The follower who disrespects any of these conditions will immediately lose his affiliation to the Tareeqah and he will only reconnect with Shaykh Ahmad Tijaani (May Allaah be satisfied with him) after repenting, and having renewed his pact with him, (with one of his Muqqaddams), expressing profound sincerity in the desire to further his education].



فصل الثالث: الواجبات للمريد
3RD SECTION: SPECIAL DUTIES OF THE DISCIPLE (WITH CAUTIONS AND DUE RESPECTS)
٩ دوام المحافظة على الصلوات الخمس في أوقاتها وفي الجماعة إن أمكن
9. The disciple of this Path should keep to the performance of the five obligatory prayers at their due times and in congregation as possible as it should be.


١٠ عدم الأمن من مكر الله لقوله تعالى: أَفَأَمِنُوا مَكْرَ اللهِ فَلاَ يَأْمَنُ مَكْرَ اللهِ إِلاَّ الْقَوْمُ الخَاسِرُونَ سورة الأعراف آية ٩٩
10. The disciple of this Path should never be confident of Allaah’s contrivance (plot) based on His Words that read: “Are they then secure against the contrivance of Allaah? None feels secure against Allaah’s contrivance except the people who are lost” [Soorah al-A’raaf (7): 99].


١١ الإجتماع للوظيفة وذكر الهيلله بعد عصر يوم الجمعة يعنى أن شروط الوظيفة:
الإجتماع لقراءتها مع الإخوان إن كان ثم إخوان و ليس لهم عذر ونحوه
11. The disciple of this Path should perform the Wazeefah Litany and Haylalah Litany after ‘Asr Prayer on Friday(s) in congregation; that means, one of the conditions of Wazeefah is to recite its litany with the brethren in congregation and there be no excuse to it.


۱٢ عدم المقاطعة بينه وبين المسلمين لا سيما إخوانه فى الطريقة
12. The disciple of this Path should avoid the separation of the tice-link between him and the Muslims [except in the case of religious necessity]; not even with his brethren in this Sufi Path.


۱٣ عدم التهاون بالورد كتأخيره عن وقته من عير عدر
13. The disciple of this Path should keep against the negligence of the Tijaniyyah Mandatory Litany (Wird) such as postponement/delay of its (litany’s) period with no valid excuse.


۱٤ عدم التصدر للإعطاء من غير إذن صحيح.
14. The disciple of this Path should avoid claiming a spiritual leader (i.e; claiming the title of Muqaddam) to be giving them (the intending Mureeds) initiation without prior valid/authenticated permission (from the Shaykh).


۱٥ احترام كل من كان منتسبا للشيخ رضى الله تعالى عنه لاسيما الكبار من أهل الخصوصية
15. The disciple of this Path should honour all those afflicted to Shaykh Ahmad Tijaani may Allaah, the Exaclted, be satisfied with him even more also to the elites amongst the devoted ones.


١٦ بر الوالدين.
16. The disciple of this Path should be kind to his or her parents.


١٧ مجانية المنتقين على الشيخ رضي الله عنه و هم المبغضون والمنكرون
17. The disciple of this Path should avoid keeping the company of critics against the Shaykh (i.e; Shaykh Ahmad Tijaani and his Sufi Path) may Allaah be satisfied with him-; for those (critics) are the haters and decriers!

[While this section of conditions lead not to an immediate rapture of the affiliation (the flux) between the Shaykh and the disciple as they should nonetheless be respected (by all) but yet whoever fails to respect any one of these conditions should resume immediately and with enthusiasm, in other that Allaah (The glorified and the Exalted) permits him to remain in the Tareeqah].



فصل الرابع: شروط لواجبات في طريقة التجانية
4TH SECTION: CONDITIONS OF VALIDITY FOR THE MANDATORY LITANIES OF THE TIJANIYYAH PATH
۱۸ أن لا يقرأ جوهرة الكمال إلا بطهارة المائية لأنه سيدنا محمّد صلى الله عليه وسلم والخلفاء الأربعة ابوبكرعمرعثمان و على رضي الله عنهم يحضرون لقراءتها عند السابعة                                                                    
18. The disciple of this Path should not recite Jawharatu-l-Kamaal except with water ablution because our Master, Prophet Muhammad ( صلى الله عليه وسلم) and the Four Rightly-Guided Caliphs [Abo Bakr (Abdullah or ‘Ateeq), ‘Umar, ‘Uthmaan and ‘Aliyy may Allaah be pleased with them-] often appear at its recitation when it is seventh****.


۱٩ الطهارة من الحدث إما بالماء أو بالتيمم على الحد الشرعى فى ذالك
19. The disciple of this Path should perform the purification of the impurity either with the Water Ablution or with the Tayammum (Dry/Sand Ablution) based on the Shariah Rules on this concept.


٢٠ طهارة الخبث من الجسد والثوب والمكان على الحد المشروع فى الصلاة ابتداء ودوما
20. The disciple of this Path should perform the purification of dirt from the body, the cloth and the place based on the Shariah Rules just as in the case of Salaah (Prayer).


٢۱ ستر العورة على الحد المحدود فى الصلاة شرعا فى حق الرجل والمرأة
21. The disciple of this Path should cover up his body based on the Shariah Rules just as (also) in the Salaah (prayer); this is a rule for both male and female adherents of Tijaniyyah Sufi Path.


٢٢ ترك الكلام من ابتداء الورد إلى انتهائه إلا لعذر فلا يضر الكلام القليل كالكلمة و الكلمتين إن لم تفد الإشارة إلا لإجابة الوالدين فلا يضر ولو جاوز الكلمتين
22. The disciple of this Path should avoid any speech from the beginning of the Wird to its end except with a justification: there is no harm in speaking as little as a word or two words if the gesture is not sufficient or understood. Yet also, except answering/responding to calls of one’s parents; no harm if the two words go beyond!


٢٣ النية وهي القصد إلى ذكر ما التزمه من الورد فيقصد ورد الصباح أو ورد المساء ولا يكفيه القصد إلى مطلق الذكر ولا بد مع قصده للورد من قصده مع الفعل كونه مطلوبا للورد
23. The disciple of this Path should make the intention. This simply means that the intent/purpose towards Dhikr is mandatory on him from the WirdLitany; making an intention for the Morning Litany (i.e; Laazimu-s-Sabahan)- or for the Evening Litany (i.e; Laazimu-l-Masaa’a). Thus, this does not suffice the intention to absolute Dhikr even if such an intention is made for the Wird. Whoever makes an intention with action (i.e; his acts of Dhikr corroborate his state of mind) is indeed required for the Litany (Wird) by the Lord!

[Whoever disrespects any of these conditions renders his litanies invalid, and it is his duty to perform them again.].


فصل الخامس: آدب الأوراد
5TH SECTION: SPECIAL ETHICS FOR THE LITANIES (AWRAAD)
٢٤ أن يكون طالب التلقين خاليا من أوراد المشايخ أو منسلخ عنها
24. The disciple of this Path should be a seeker (i.e; student) of indoctrination/knowledge of Awraad ‘Litanies’ (sing. Wird Litany-) of the Shaykhs [Spiritual Guides of this Tijaniyyah Path]; spending much time on its performance.


٢٥ استقبال القبلة بجميع بدنه كالصلاة من حين الشروع فى الذكر إلى أن يختم
25. The disciple of this Path should face the Qiblah with the entire self (body and mind) in performing the Awraad (Litanies) just as in the Salaah (Prayer) as stated in the Shariah under the concept of Dhikr -Remembrance of Allaah-(except as on short or long journey) till its end.


٢٦ الإسرار فى الورد من أوله إلى آخره و لا بد من إسماع المرء نفسه ألفاظ الورد
26. The disciple of this Path should recite the litany in a low voice from its beginning till its end such that one can hear oneself alone*.


٢٧ الجلوس فلا يذكر مضطجعا إلا إذا لم يستطع الجلوس ولا قائما إلا إذا شغل عنه
27. The disciple of this Path should execute the Litany in the sitting position. One should not pronounce its Dhikr while lying down except if one is not able to sit and also not in standing position except if its space is occupied/engaged.


٢۸ استحضار صورة الشيخ رضي الله عنه أو صورة النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم لمن قدر على ذالك حال تلاوة الورد والوظيفة
28. The disciple of this Path should vitualize the image of Shaykh Ahmad Tijani may Allaah be satisfied with him or (even yet) the image of the Prophet ( صلى الله عليه وسلم)-; for whoever is capable of doing this during the recitation of the Wazeefah Litany and other Litanies.


٢٩ استحضار ما قدر عليه من معانى الذكر.
29. The disciple of this Path should recall or evocate as much as possible the meaning of the Dhikr [i.e; the Litanies (Awraad) of this Path].

[Failure to respect these conditions does not invalidate the prayers but does however reduce their effectiveness in term of divine light.].

** [Condition 1] In supplement to footnote no: 15 @ page 39 of my newly translated book “SPIRIT OF EXCELLENT ETHICS -روح الأدب -”, the kind of Shaykh a Mureed must choose and constitute with, as itemized by Imaam Ghazaal, should possess the following qualities: ‘patience cum perseverance, regular prayer, gratitude (to Allaah), reliance (upon Allaah -the Exalted-), conviction (confidence), contentment (yet with generosity) and tranquility of the soul, forbearance (involving self-control), humility, knowledge, honesty (with sincerity), modesty, trustworthiness, dignity, serenity (silence), deliberation and other likely characteristics (qualities)’ [read: pages 96-97 of ‘An Epistle to the World! The Translation of Ayyual-l-Walad Dear Beloved son- (2017) by: Shaykh al-Imaam aboo Haamid Muhammad Al-Ghazaali (RA); translated by the present Translator].

*** [Condition 6]  The disciple here is required, after being initiated by his preferred Shaykh, to be constant in observing his/her obligatory litanies of this Tijaniyyah Path and must be free from doing any other Sufi-spiritual Paths cum taking any litanies from the Shaykh of other Sufi Paths. This means that he/she should be determined and firm to remain loyal to his/her Shaykh based on the pledge (oath of allegiance bay’ah) he/she made to this Tareeqah for the whole of his/her lifetime.

****[Condition 18] Reciting Jawratu-l-Kamal also has its two main conditions viz:
 i- This requires pure water (for the ablution) and a clean place that is large enough for six people even if it is for a single recitation.
ii- If the follower does the Tayyamum (dry ablution), or if he is unable to clean himself with water after relieving himself, or if he has filth (najas) on his clothes or his body which he is not able to clean, he will recite Solaatu-l-Faatihi twenty times (20 times) instead of the Jawrat-l-Kamal during theWazeefah.

If the disciple does not meet any of the special conditions for the recitation of the Jawrat-l-Kamal when performing Wazeefah, it is invalidated, and he will be required to do it again. [Read; 29 Conditions of Tareeqa-t-Tijaniyyah by: Shaykh Muhammd El-Mansur El-MuhieddineTidjani (2005).]

*****[Condition 26] Here, the case is for a disciple who, out of a valid excuse, performs hisWazeefah lonely, though it requires to be done in congregation! But the reverse is the case when the litany of Wazeefah is recited in congregation, it should here be performed out loud yet harmoniously. This condition is generally applied to the performance of the Morning Laazim and the Evening Laazim as these two Litanies are executed by the disciple lonely in a low voice.
