THE RAMADAN TARAWIH-NAFILA PROGRAMME OF MEDINA BAYE

By: Mustafa Briggs

In preparation for the month of Ramadan, I asked Shaykh Tijani Rabbani, who sometimes leads tarawih currently in Medina Baye alongside his elder brother Cheikh Ould Rabbani, the son of Abdallah Rabbani, who was  the Mauritian scholar and master of Quran and student of Shaykh Ibrahim Niasse who was in charge of teaching his children and grandchildren the Qur’an and who was put in charge of leading Tarawih in Medina by Shaykh Ibrahim Niasse himself in the 50’s, for the method his family use to complete the Quran during Nafila Tarawih in Ramadan, following the method of Shaykh Ibrahim Niasse.

He told me, that in Medina Baye Tarawih in Ramadan is 10 Rakaat with Shaf’ and Witr (13 in total), in accordance with the Hadith narrated in the Muwatta of Imam Malik:

Yahya related to me from Malik from Hisham ibn Urwa from his father that A'isha, umm al-muminin said, "The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, used to pray thirteen rakas in the night and then would pray two rakas when he heard the adhan for the subh prayer."

As we know, the Quran is divided into 30 sections, or Juz, and each Juz is divided into two Hizb, and each hizb is divided into 4 rub’ or 8 thumun’

In each of the first 8 Rakat, a rub’ (Quater of a Hizb) is recited, until a Juz is reached and then in the last 2 Rakaat a Thumun, making it a Juz and a Rub’ in total for the first 10 Rakaat, then Shaf’ and Witr can be done with any surahs.

This is done for the first 24 Nights of Ramadan, which if completed makes 54 Hizbs (or 27 Juz)

Then on the 25th, 26th and 27th night, a Juz is recited in each night over the 10 Rakaat;

- a Rub’ in each of the first 6 Rakaat and
- a Thumun in each of the next 4 Rakaat,

Allowing you to complete the whole Quran by the 27th Night which we know is celebrated in Medina Baye as Laylatul Khatm or the night of completion, or Laylatul Qadr.

I wanted to share this information so that maybe if anyone of us wants to follow this programme at home they could do so,

May Allah make it easy for us all this Ramadan and bless us in it, Ameen!

SECRET OF PROPHET'S NIGHT JOURNEY
[An Excerpt from the Beyond Bilal: Black History in Islām event @ Valley Ranch Islamic Center]

And we have a tradition in West Africa. In Ramadan, after Asr, everyday, the scholars will give Tafsīr in local languages. But the perspectives in some of the West Africa Tafāsir that i haven't heard anywhere else.

So, for example, the Prophet on the Night of Isrā and Mi'rāj, he is taken to/through the seven heavens and he meets different Prophets on each level of the seven heavens.

If you look at the Prophets he meets, chronologically, the order doesn't make sense, and even in terms of rank, the order doesn't make sense. You see Adam on the first level, and then you see Sayyidina Yahya and Iesa on the second level, etc.

In one of the Tafsīr sessions i was listening to, Shaykh Ibrahim Niasse explained that:

"The Prophet went on Isra' wa l Mi'rāj at a time in his life that was the most difficult period situation his life, which was after his wife and uncle had passed away, and he found himself in a very very difficult position. So, Allah gave him the Isrā' wal Mi'rāj to give him glad tidings of what is about to come. Allah tells us in the Qur'ān (Chapter 11: Verse 120):

وَكُلًّۭا نَّقُصُّ عَلَيْكَ مِنْ أَنۢبَآءِ ٱلرُّسُلِ مَا نُثَبِّتُ بِهِۦ فُؤَادَكَ ۚ

"And We relate to you ˹O Prophet˺ the stories of the messengers in order strengthen your heart."

So he explained that, On the First level, he sees Adam, this is because *Adam* left home and went to a new place, which was where Allah establishes him as the Khalīfa. The same way he left Jannah for Earth, was the same way the Prophet was about to leave Makkah and go to Madinah.

The he explained further that, On the next level, he sees *Sayyidina Isa & Sayyidina Yahya*, because they were opposed by people.
When the Prophet reaches Madinah, he was going to face new level of opposition, specifically from Bani Israil, the same people that opposed the Previous Prophets before him.

He said, on the next level, he sees, *Sayyidinā Yusuf*, which was because Sayyidina Yusuf was betrayed by his brothers, he wasn't protected by his brothers and was put in a difficult situation, and sent out of country (because of his brothers), and when he returned back with authority, he forgave his brothers and reunited with them. The same way the Prophet (saw) after leaving Makkah and facing opposition in Madinah, will return and be reunited with the Quraysh in Makka and he will forgive them. And we see that in the Fat'h Makkah where he said the exact same thing that Yusuf said to his brothers.

He said, on the next level, we see him with *Sayidinā Idris*, Sayidinā Idris was the first Prophet to write with a pen. The Prophet (saw),  after establishing his authority, he starts to write to different kings and invite them to Islam.

On the next level, he sees *Sayidinā Harun*, he was the mahbub/beloved of his people/community. Nabi Musa was more Jalāl/Rigorous&Rough. So the people couldn't interact with him much the way they interacted with his younger brother, Sayidinā Musa was Jalāl and Sayidinā Harun was Jamāl (open and friendly), so he became beloved by his nation, the same way the Prophet was beloved by the Arab Jazirah/Peninsula, in his final days, because he  united all the tribes, and brought peace.

He also sees *Sayyidinā Musa* - when wandering in the desert, had to go into battle with the powerful tribes at that time. After the Prophet took over Makkah, go into battle with the Roman Empire and other places.

And at the final level, he sees *Sayidinā Ibrahim* - he sees him because he reestablished the Baytullah (house of Allah), the Ka'bah and the  Manasik we follow at Hajj and Umra, they are all based on the stories of Nabi Ibrahim, wife (Sayyidatunā Hajar) and his son (Sayyidinā Ismā'eel). Before he returns to Allah (after the 7th level), he sees Sayidinā Ibrāhīm leaning against the Baytul Ma'mur, which is a representation of the Ka'abah, meaning that in the final stage of his life, he (Prophet Muhammad) will finally achieve his goal of going on Hajj, which is the Hajjatul Wada', and then he returns to Allah.

So, Isra' wal Mi'raj was a story to prepare the Prophet for all of the different stages of his life to come. Such that the Prophet could take strength from the stories of the Prophets that came before him."

That's something i heard from this Tafsīr in West Africa, that am sure is in enriching to a lot of us, we can see that story from a different perspective and that's something i haven't read from all other books, which is why one of the Mauritanian scholars who came to Senegal for the Tafsir of Shaykh Ibrahim [Sīdī Shaykhānī Manna Abba Wuld Tulba] said;

فَكَمْ قَدْ جَاءَكُمْ مِنْهُمْ سُؤَالٌ*** وَكَمْ قَدْ جَاءَهُمْ مِنْكُمْ جَوَابُ

How many questions have come to us from you,
and how many answers have come from you to us.

بِمَا فِي الْكُتْبِ قَدْ تَاتِي وَتَاتِي*** بِمَا لَمْ يَاتِ قَطُّ بِهِ كِتَابُ

You bring to us what is in this book and in that book,
and then you close the books and you bring us what we haven't seen in any of the books.

If you know the Mauritanians, you'll know they have memorized and read all of the books.

Alhamdulillah!
