QASIDA AL-HAMZIYYA BY SHAYKH MUHAMMAD BŪSAYRĪ: EXCERPTS
(Ancient Panegyric which contains the Biography & History of Prophet Muḥammad)

Intro
The third most well-known qasida of Imam al-Busiri is the Hamziyya. A Hamziyya is a poem all of whose verses rhyme in the Arabic letter hamza. Busiri wrote it with more than 400 verses which contains the biography and history of Prophet Muḥammad. The Hamziyya is an ancient panegyric form.
THE EXALTED SPIRITUAL POSITION OF THE PROPHET [S.A.W]
Preamble
All the Prophets Allah sent are exalted, but the most exalted one among them is our Prophet [Salla Allahu Alaihi wa Sallam]. So here, Imam Busiri[RA] is going to establish the reason why the Prophet[S.a.w] is more exalted and loftier than all of the Prophets of Allah, so He said
COUPLET ONE
كَيْفَ تَرْقَى رُقِيَّكَ الأَنْبِيَاءُ
يَا سَمَاءً مَا طَاوَلَتْهَا سمَاءُ
How can the Prophets be able to rise to your ascendency
O a Sky that no sky surpassed!
COUPLET TWO
لَمْ يُسَاوُوكَ فِي عُلاَكَ وَقَدْ حَالَ
سَنىً مِنْكَ دُونَهُمْ وَسَنَاءُ
They were not at par with you in your elevation
Verily, a light and loftiness from you has constrain them
COUPLET THREE
إِنَّمَا مَثَّلُوا صِفَاتِكَ لِلنَّاسِ
كَمَا مَثَّلَ النُّجُومَ الْمَاءُ
Rather, they symbolized your attributes to mankind
Just as water symbolizes the stars
COUPLET FOUR
أَنْتَ مِصْبَاحُ كُلِّ فَضْلٍ فَمَا تَصْدُرُ
إِلاَّعَنْ ضَوْئِكَ الأَضْواءُ
You are the Lantern of every grace
For lights do not appear except from your Light
COUPLET FIVE
لَكَ ذَاتُ الْعُلُومِ مِنْ عَالِمِ الْغَيْبِ
وَمِنْهَا لآدَمَ الأَسْمَاءُ
With you are the real Knowledge’s from the Knower of the Unseen
Among it are the names for Adam

HIS BIRTH [UPON HIM BE BLESSINGS AND PEACE]
Preamble
The Prophet[S.a.w] was born in the year of Elephant. His Mother was Sayyada Aminah Bint Wahab[R.anha] and His Father was Sayaduna Abdullahi Ibn Abdul Mutallib[Ra]. Here Imam Busiri[Ra] is going to tell us the enormity and reverence of the Prophet’s Lineage. Thus, from Prophet Adam [As] to His Parents, Sayaduna Abdullahi and Nana Aminah and how Allah protected the Lineage from any form of Blemishes as reported in several hadiths. He will proceed to inform us about the several Miracles that occurred in the night the prophet was born and how Important that night is to the religion of Islam. So Imam Busiri[Ra] said.
COUPLET NINE
وَبَدَا لِلْوُجُودِ مِنكَ كَرِيمٌ
مِنْ كَرِيمٍ آبَاؤُهُ كُرَمَاءُ
Nobility from you appeared to Creation
From the Noble One, whose forefathers were Nobles
COUPLET TEN
نَسَبٌ تَحْسِبُ الْعُلاَ بِحُلاَهُ
قَلَّدَتْهَا نُجَومَهَا الْجَوْزَاءُ
A lineage you will presume greatness with its adornment,
Of which al- Jawza has beautified it with its star
COUPLET ELEVEN
حَبَّذَا عِقْدُ سُؤْدَدٍ وَفَخَارٍ
أَنْتَ فِيهِ الْيَتِيمَةُ الْعَصْمَاءُ
Yes! A Jewel of supremacy and nobility
In it, you are unparalleled and the most preserved!
COUPLET TWELVE
وَمُحَيّاً كَالشَّمْسِ مِنْكَ مُضِيءٌ
أَسْفَرَتْ عَنْهُ لَيْلَةٌ غَرَّاءُ
A face from you illuminate like the Sun
Of which a bright night lit with it

وَبَدَتْ فِي رَضَاعِهِ مُعْجِزِاتٌ
لَيْسَ فِيهَاعَنِ الْعُيُونِ خَفَاءُ
Miracles became apparent in His breastfeeding
Which there was no concealing in them for the eyes
COUPLET TWENTY NINE
إِذْ أَبَتْهُ لِيُتْمِهِ مُرْضِعَاتٌ
قُلْنَ مَافِي الْيَتِيمِ عَنَّا غَنَاءُ
When Lactating Mothers refused Him for been an orphan
They said, ‘There is no benefit for us in an orphan’.
COUPLET THIRTY
فَأَتَتْهُ مِنْ آلِ سَعْدٍ فَتَاةٌ
قَدْ أَبَتْهَا لِفَقْرِهَا الرُّضَعَاءُ
Then a girl from the Family of Sa’ad came to Him
Foster Families have refused her because of her poverty
COUPLET THIRTY ONE
أَرْضَعَتْهُ لِبَانَهَا فَسَقَتْهَا
وَبَنِيهَا أَلْبَانهُنَّ الشَّاءُ
She Suckled Him her breast milk,
And the goats nourished her and her Children their Milk

وَبِهَا مِنْ فِصَالِهِ الْبُرَحَاءُ
She went to His Grandfather verily she has weaned Him
And with her there was pain from His Separation
COUPLET THIRTY EIGHT
إِذْ أَحَاطَتْ بِهِ مَلاَئِكَةُ اللهِ
فَظَنَّتْ بِأَنَّهُمْ قُرَنَاءُ
When the angels of Allah encircled Him
And she thought they were devils
